What You'll Need:
- Cardboard
- Tissue paper
- Clear drying school glue
- Markers
- Scissors
- Get your cardboard ready. Instead of buying pricey sheets from the craft store, reuse what you have at home. I cut apart an empty box that once held fruit snacks. The bigger the letter S that you want to make, the bigger the box you'll need.
- Help your child to draw the letter S on the cardboard using a marker. Draw a bubble letter that is at least 1-inch thick. If your child is struggling to draw her own S, lightly sketch one first in pencil for her. Have her trace over the pencil lines with a bright marker.
- Cut out the S. Typically, I'm 100 percent for letting kids do all of their own art themselves. But, in this case my overprotective side is coming out. The thick cardboard is tricky for little kids to cut through, making it easy for them to accidentally slice a finger. Cut through the cardboard yourself.
- Tear or cut colorful tissue paper into squares and rectangles. Size the tissue depending on how big or small the S is. For a larger S, cut pieces of paper that are roughly the size of your child's hand. If you're making a smaller-sized S try 2-by-2-inch pieces. You can let your child cut these out (using children's safety scissors) under your supervision. She can also tear the tissue with her fingers.
- Dot glue onto the S, working in 1- to 2-inch sections.
- Crumple and ball up the tissue paper (one piece at a time) and press it onto the glue, making faux flowers. Continue on with this process until your child fills up the entire cardboard S.
